Where has the creativity gone?

Posted by MaoDaMighty - February 12th, 2010

I know genuine originality is impossible to achieve; everything's been done before. I used to come to Newgrounds to get all my music, a lot of artists here do put a lot of creativity and original thought into their art. But the number of these people has been diminishing lately. Recently, the majority of audio submissions (in the Hip Hop portal) have become very dull to my ears. Maybe I've overdosed on my listening and nothing sounds unique to me.

There are a few artists on this site who I do enjoy listening to. I'm not going to name anyone, but you know if you are the ones I'm talking about.

I don't think I am safe from this assumption of lacking originality; maybe the reason I've lost my taste for this music lately is because I'm lacking the flavor. Who cares?

I'm going to take a break from submitting music, unless its a track I've collaborated with another vocalist on who does not have a NG account. I am going to cut back dramatically on my reviewing too. I am only going to review when I believe it counts --when you deserve it.

For all those reading this, please, don't do what's popular to the masses, do what matters to you. This is a great site to get a variety of tips from a variety of artists from different sides of this world music. Practice like an addict.

This is the time for elevation.

Whats going on?

Check out some Wax and Herbal T on Youtube while you're taking a break.

Amen. Sometimes you do just need a break, then after a while of not doing any music, you can jump back in full force. It's a great feeling when the juices have had time to build up and you let them flow again.

The funny thing is, I just wrote a song I'm really feeling. Its feels like a real step up for me too. The lyrics just came to me naturally. I think my biggest problem was trying to force the juices out.

But I hear ya on the break, creativity is like a single-celled organism sometimes; you gotta let mitosis take place so the cells can divide and expand.
